South Washington Street/Woodrow Wilson Bridge Urban Deck Retaining Walls and Multi-Use Trails
ALA designed four pedestrian structures totaling 1,900-ft adjacent to the Urban Deck Bridge at Washington Street. The structures carry a 12-ft wide pedestrian trail as well as a sound barrier wall. Design included a wide variety of foundation types in order to accommodate varying soil conditions and to reduce vibrational impacts on adjacent properties, such as an historical cemetery and church.
Other project challenges included interfacing with existing and proposed utilities located parallel to and crossing beneath the structure, construction sequencing to maintain traffic on I-95 and Washington Street, and aesthetic treatment of the sound walls and exposed faces of the retaining walls to be tri-color stained to coordinate with the adjacent Wilson Bridge project.
